VOLUNTEERS converged on Keast Park and the surrounding foreshore last week to conduct a clean-up effort.
196 Chelsea BeachPatrol, 3198 Seaford BeachPatrol, and the Carrum Down Adventures and Pathfinders came together to clean up trash from the sand and scrubs. In total, more than 100 people donated their time.
Seaford BeachPatrol leader Jaqui O’Leary said “when groups like BeachPatrol and the Pathfinders unite, we don’t just clean the beach. We send a message that we care about our backyard.”
“Even with all this effort, we are still seeing too many bottles and cans ending up in our dunes,” O’Leary said.
By the end of the day, more than 115kgs of trash had been picked up.
Advocacy group Boomerang Alliance supported the clean-up event as part of its campaign to increase the Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme refund from 10 cents to 20 cents.
